A number of churches in the Diocese of Maine has been partnering with parishes in Haiti for more than a decade.
For ten years S. Mary’s partnered with the little mission church of St. Matthias in Grande Riviere du Nord.
In fact, in 2011, two of our parishioners went to visit our partner parish, met with the people and the priest, spent time surveying what the Episcopal church was doing in Cap Haitien, and we spent a week teaching at an ecumenical Christian school in Ouanaminthe, Institute Univers.
We became so enthused about the personal connections made while teaching at the school that, after completing our ten-year diocesan commitment to St. Matthias, we chose to redirect our focus, and we are presently partnering with Institute Univers. We took a second ten-day trip to the school in the fall of 2013.
We have tentative plans to return to teach once again in November of 2015.
Because we have established a relationship with the students and the school, our mission work is fulfilling and exciting on many levels.
We feel we receive far more from our Haitian brothers and sisters than we give, but they are certainly grateful for us as well.
To date more than a dozen students from the school have been accepted at U.S. colleges, and our first student to attend college in Maine has just arrived at Southern Maine Community College.
