Nathan Wilson Ferrell

The Ferrell family in August 2023 (L to R): Angus Ferrell, Nathan Ferrell, Tom Martin (son-in-law), Se’ Ferrell Martin, Erin McGee Ferrell, Fiona Ferrell

Nathan Wilson Ferrell was born and raised in Burlington County, New Jersey, in the Philadelphia suburbs. The youngest of two siblings, he attended The University of Vermont where he studied German and Environmental Education. While in college, his call to ordained leadership in the church was recognized, and he also became engaged to his college sweatheart and the love of his life, Erin McGee, from Louisville, Kentucky.

After graduation and their wedding in 1994, Nathan and Erin moved to Richmond, Virginia where Nathan attended The Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. Once the Master of Divinity degree was granted in May 1998, Nathan was ordained to the Gospel Ministry by Ginter Park Baptist Church in Richmond. However, after a few years of service in The First Baptist Church of Winchester, Virginia, he discerned a clear calling to return to The Episcopal Church in which he was baptized and confirmed as a youth. After attending classes at The Virginia Theological Seminary and Trinity School for Ministry, Nathan was ordained as a deacon and as a presbyter by Bishop Peter Lee of Virginia in 2002. Since that time, Nathan has served parishes in Virginia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and, now, in Maine. All three of the Ferrell children (Angus, Se’ and Fiona) were born while the family was in Virginia.

Nathan’s spiritual journey has been heavily influenced by his experiences with Young Life, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Saint Francis of Assisi and the Franciscan movement, Eastern Orthodoxy, the Desert Fathers and Mothers, and the writings of Dallas Willard. His wife, Erin McGee Ferrell, is an accomplished artist who paints with oils in the post-impressionistic style. Together, they have three children. Whenever possible, they find time away from Saint Mary’s rectory in Falmouth to spend time at their small cabin on a forested mountain ridge in New Hampshire.

In April 2017, Nathan was commissioned as a Direct Commission Officer in the United States Navy in a swearing-in ceremony at Saint Mary’s. He is serving in the Navy Chaplain Corps as a Reservist. He is proud to help with caring for the brave men and women of our nation’s Sea Services who risk their lives to defend freedom and democracy around the world.

Nathan is a dog-lover, an avid runner, weight-lifter, nordic skiier, mountain climber, kayaker and all-around outdoors person. And he is also a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan. Forget about ever trying to schedule a meeting or event which conflicts with the Eagles schedule! (Go Birds! Bleed Green!)
