St Mary Schola Presents Nature’s Voice
This radiant program celebrates the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun with a musical journey through sacred nature-inspired works—and features the world premiere of a brand-new setting of the Canticle by Bruce Scott Fithian, the St Mary Schola's Founder and Music Director Emeritus and former organist/choirmaster at the Church of Saint Mary.
Fithian’s new work, scored for choir, soloists, and historical instruments, is a heartfelt meditation on St. Francis’s text—an outpouring of praise for Brother Sun, Sister Moon, and all creation. A cornerstone of Maine’s musical and academic life, Fithian served for decades on the faculty at the University of Southern Maine, where he nurtured generations of artists and educators. Many of those same USM-trained musicians now perform in this ensemble, a living testament to his lasting impact.
“Bruce has given us a piece that is both ancient and new,” says Artistic Director James Kennerley. “He animates the Umbrian poetry in new and exciting ways, drawing deeply from the well of early music. And yet, it shines with personal warmth, reverence, and clarity. It is a fitting tribute to both the saint and the composer.”
